Dagmar La'ela'e Sundberg was born and raised in Cologne, Germany. She received both her Pre-Diploma and her Diploma in Applied Linguistics, American Studies, and Law from the University of Heidelberg.

After graduating from the University of Heidelberg, she moved to Virginia, where she taught ESL at Richard Bland College in Petersburg in addition to her work as a translator/interpreter. Dagmar later moved to O'ahu, Hawai'i, where she spent most of her life, until she relocated to Colorado in order to enjoy the four seasons. During her years in Hawai'i, she taught English, ESL, American Studies, and Civil Rights at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.

Moreover, she immersed herself in Hawaiian Language and Culture, as well as Hula. As a court interpreter, Dagmar was frequently in court, working with English, German, French, and Dutch.
